For the Cupcakes

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour 125g
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 50g
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted 115g
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar 150g
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed 100g
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup whole milk 120ml
  • 1/2 cup hot coffee (or hot water) 120ml

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 230g
  • 2 cups powdered sugar 240g
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 65g
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream 120ml
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Chocolate shavings (optional)
  • Mini chocolate chips (optional)
  • White chocolate curls (optional)

Instructions

Baking the Cupcakes

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners.
  • In a medium bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well-mixed and set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the melted butter along with granulated sugar and brown sugar until smooth.
  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually integrate the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, alternating with milk and hot coffee, mixing until just combined.
  • Divide the batter evenly among cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
  • Bake for 18-22 minutes. Check for doneness with a toothpick; it should come out clean.
  • Cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Making the Frosting

  • In a medium bowl, beat softened butter with powdered sugar and cocoa powder until smooth.
  • Add heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Beat until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  • Spread the frosting generously on cooled cupcakes and garnish with chocolate shavings, mini chocolate chips, or white chocolate curls if desired.

Notes

Use quality ingredients for the best flavor. Make sure eggs are at room temperature for optimal mixing. Hot coffee enhances chocolate flavor but you can use hot water as a substitute. Watch the baking time closely to avoid overcooking.
