  • 1 box chocolate cake mix Use a box mix or homemade chocolate cake.
  • 1/2 cup water Ensures the cake remains moist.
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil Adds richness to the cake.
  • 2 large eggs Helps elevate the cake's texture.

For the pudding layer

  • 1 box instant chocolate pudding mix Adds a creamy twist.
  • 2 cups cold milk Essential for pudding’s consistency.

For the cherry layer

  • 1 can (15 oz) cherry pie filling Brings a sweet and tangy flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon sugar Optional for extra sweetness.

For the whipped cream layer

  • 2 cups heavy cream Creates a fluffy layer.
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar Sweetens the whipped cream.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances the sweetness.

For garnish

  • to taste dark chocolate shavings or chocolate chips For garnish.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare chocolate cake mix as per package instructions with water, oil, and eggs until smooth.
  • Pour mixture into a 9-inch round cake pan and bake until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • After the cake has baked, let it cool completely before cutting into bite-sized cubes.

Pudding Preparation

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together instant chocolate pudding mix and cold milk. Let it sit for about five minutes until thickened.

Whipped Cream Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, whip heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.

Assembly

  • In a large trifle dish, start with a layer of cake cubes, followed by chocolate pudding, then cherry pie filling. Repeat layers until the dish is filled.
  • Top with whipped cream layer, and sprinkle with dark chocolate shavings or chips, and garnish with fresh cherries if desired.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least two hours or ideally overnight.

Notes

For best results, allow the trifle to chill properly. Consider making cake and pudding ahead to simplify assembly. Avoid rushing the chilling time.
