Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream the softened butter and dark brown sugar until light and fluffy, then add eggs one at a time. Mix in molasses until fully integrated.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with hot water until smooth.

Baking

  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Frosting

  • Once cooled, whip together powdered sugar, softened butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth, then frost the cooled cake.

Notes

For healthier alternatives, you can use whole wheat flour, coconut oil instead of butter, or incorporate pureed pumpkin or applesauce. To avoid common mistakes, ensure butter is softened, not melted, and do not overmix the batter.
