For the dumplings

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Base ingredient for the dumplings.
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder Ensures the dumplings are light and fluffy.
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt For seasoning.
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened Adds richness.
  • 0.5 cup milk (whole or 2 percent) Helps bind the dough.

Instructions
 

Brown the Beef

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef. Cook until nicely browned, draining any excess fat if needed.

Add Aromatics

  • Stir in the diced onion and sauté until translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

Incorporate Tomato Paste

  • Introduce the tomato paste to the skillet and cook for a minute. Sprinkle in the flour to thicken the mixture.

Pour in Broth

  • Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring. Add thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Let simmer for 8-10 minutes until slightly thickened.

Prepare Dumpling Dough

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt for the dumplings. Mix in the softened butter until crumbly and gradually add milk to form a cohesive dough.

Drop in Dumplings

  • Scoop dollops of the dumpling dough onto the simmering beef mixture, spacing them evenly.

Steam to Perfection

  • Cover the skillet and reduce heat to low. Let the dumplings steam for about 15 minutes without lifting the lid.

Check for Doneness

  • After steaming, check dumplings for doneness. Remove from heat and let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For added flavor, mix in Worcestershire sauce or herbs. To keep dumplings light, do not lift the lid while they’re steaming.
