Ingredients
  

For the Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (more or less to taste)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • to taste garlic powder, salt, and black pepper

For the Ground Beef and Gravy

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 cups beef broth, divided
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions
 

Preparation for Mashed Potatoes

  • Fill a medium pot with water and add salt. Bring it to a boil.
  • Once boiling, add the peeled and chopped potatoes, allowing them to cook for about 7-8 minutes until fork-tender.
  • While the potatoes are cooking, heat the butter and milk together until melted.
  • Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them well, then mash them until smooth.
  • Incorporate the melted butter-milk mixture and season with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to taste. Set aside.

Cooking the Ground Beef and Gravy

  • In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 1/4 cup of beef broth and set aside.
  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef.
  • Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.
  • Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, approximately 3-4 minutes.
  • Pour in the remaining beef broth, followed by adding the seasonings of your choice.
  • Mix in the cornstarch mixture and stir until the gravy thickens.
  • Serve the mashed potatoes topped with the ground beef and gravy, and garnish as desired.
