Ingredients

Cake Base

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Fudge Sauce

  • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar for fudge sauce
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder for fudge sauce
  • 1-1/4 cups boiling water

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Lightly grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
  • Boil water in a kettle.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, flour, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Mix until well-combined.
  • Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract; whisk until the batter is smooth and almost lump-free.
  • Pour the cake batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the remaining 1/2 cup of white sugar with the brown sugar and 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder. Evenly sprinkle this mixture over the surface of the batter.
  • Carefully pour the boiling water over the top of the cake mixture. Do not stir.

Baking

  • Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 35 minutes, or until the center appears nearly set.
  • Remove from oven and let it cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Serving

  • Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream and spoon the fudge sauce over each serving.

Notes

For an extra chocolatey depth, consider using dark cocoa powder. Optional extras include chocolate chips in the batter or top with sea salt for contrast. Best served warm.
