  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced Sweet and aromatic, they’ll caramelize beautifully.
  • 8 slices American cheese Melts perfectly for that gooey texture everyone loves.
  • 8 slices Texas toast Thick and hearty, providing the perfect base.
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter Adds richness and flavor when toasting the bread.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Essential seasonings for the beef patties.

Creamy Pepper Sauce Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp creamy pepper sauce An optional topping for an extra kick.
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise Creamy base for the sauce.
  • 2 tbsp ketchup A classic condiment bringing a hint of sweetness.
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Adds umami flavor.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder Infuses extra flavor into the patties.
  • 1 tsp onion powder Complements the fresh onions beautifully.
  • 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper Enhances the savory notes.

Instructions

Caramelizing the Onions

  • In a skillet over low heat, add your thinly sliced onions with a pinch of salt. Cook them slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes or until they turn golden brown and develop a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture.
  • Once done, remove the onions from the skillet and set them aside.

Forming and Cooking Patties

  • Take the ground beef and shape it into four oval patties, about the same size as your Texas toast.
  • Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper.
  • Using the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high and cook the patties for about four minutes on each side or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
  • Once cooked, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.

Preparing Creamy Pepper Sauce

  • In a small bowl, combine the mayo, creamy pepper sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and freshly ground black pepper.
  • Mix until all the ingredients are well incorporated.

Assembling and Toasting

  • Spread a generous amount of butter on one side of each slice of Texas toast.
  • On the non-buttered side, layer the creamy pepper sauce, a slice of cheese, the beef patty, a mound of caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and finally top with another slice of bread (buttered side facing out).
  • Return the assembled sandwiches to the skillet, cooking on medium heat until each side is golden brown and the cheese has melted.

Serving

  • Once nicely toasted and melted, carefully cut the Ultimate Patty Melts in half to showcase the layers.
  • Serve hot with sides like fries, a fresh salad, or pickles.

Notes

For perfectly caramelized onions, keep the heat low and be patient. Customize your patties by adding Worcestershire sauce directly to the beef mixture, or add sautéed mushrooms for extra flavor.
