Cookie Base Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar to add sweetness
  • 1 large egg for binding
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract imparting delightful flavor
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour creating the perfect cookie base
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder for a fluffy texture
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt to balance sweetness

Royal Icing Ingredients

  • 3 large egg whites or 4 oz meringue powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar making the icing sweet and frosty
  • 0.5 teaspoon lemon juice or water, to achieve the right consistency
  • Red, pink, and white gel food coloring for vibrant decorating
  • Heart-shaped sprinkles (optional) for added sparkle
  • Edible glitter (optional) to take the visuals to the next level

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter and granulated sugar until creamy and fluffy.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract, beating until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the butter mixture, mixing until a cohesive dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, rolling it to about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Use heart-shaped cookie cutters or any shape you fancy to cut out cookies, placing them onto the prepared baking sheet.

Baking

  • Bake the cookies in your preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Once baked, remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack.

Royal Icing Preparation

  • In a mixing bowl, beat the egg whites (or meringue powder) with powdered sugar and lemon juice (or water) until stiff peaks form.
  • Divide the icing into several bowls and tint each with the gel food coloring according to your design preferences.

Decoration

  • Once cooled, use a piping bag or spoon to artfully decorate the cookies with royal icing.
  • Sprinkle on the heart-shaped decorations or edible glitter for that extra flair.
  • Allow the royal icing to dry completely before serving or packaging your creations.

Notes

For perfect royal icing consistency, adjust thickness by adding powdered sugar or lemon juice. You can prepare the cookie dough ahead of time and refrigerate. Experiment with shapes and colors. Using flavored extracts in the icing adds extra flavor. Incorporating edible glitter into the icing adds additional sparkle.
